[Channel 4 News] Power generation: the new wave 2008.03.31

By Julian Rush:

The world’s first commercial tidal turbine will be fixed to the seabed by Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough.

It is the world’s first commercial tidal turbine, and it will produce the first electricity ever brought ashore from British tidal waters.

The 300-tonne turbine put in place in Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough will generate energy sustainably, with no noise and zero emissions.

The turbine will be fixed to the seabed in the mouth of the lough – one of the fastest tidal flows on earth – where it is expected to generate enough electricity to power 1,000 homes.

    Warranty void if …
Warranty void if seal is broken!

    No seals have died …
No seals have died and it’s been there a year.

    Give the seals some …
Give the seals some credit they could swim rings around these turbines

    We need better ways …
We need better ways of producing energy there is no doubt about that. Green energy products are usually expensive. I say we need more investment in fusion reactors. We could take fusion reactors where ever we go in space underground everywhere.

    I can’t see my self …
I can’t see my self ever using less energy. And I wont buy that “Energy Star” crap! Everything with that “energy Star” seal sucks. I have a water heater that is supposed to conserve power. The only thing I get when taking a shower is cold water. Energy Star TV’s have an image that sucks.

    Boil the seals down …
Boil the seals down and make power out of them. Problem solved!

    no seals head …
no seals head outsea the lough has all they need and the lough is big enough for more since i seen them today

    The %’s of power …
The %’s of power are based on current power usages. If people consciously reduced their power consumption, then the amount of power that could be provided by the turbines and other ‘green energy’ sources would cover more and more of the required power. Green energy sources are one side of the equation – using less power is the part of the equation that we are all responsible for. Good luck to us all.

its says at the end …
its says at the end of the report that if it minces seals it will be stopped. give them a chance. a grill is completely impractical and would probably pin seals with the current and drown them.

    How many seals will …
How many seals will die before these guys are made to cover the turbine in a protective grille.
